Native American Made Quilled Buffalo Horn Ladle: Deer Head Handle

$765.00

Share

Hand carved by local Cheyenne River Sioux Nation member Eric Iron Star, he softens the horn first and then carves and shapes it into a ladle with a deer head motif. Ladles like this were sometimes used communally and as the ladle was passed around the soup the holder would tell a tale or continue a story already being told.

The horn is from a buffalo, forming and shaping makes the surface smooth. Eric decorates the ladle with metal spots for eyes, porcupine quill wrapping, metal bells and dyed red horse hair tufts with metal cones.
